Subsea Mining Vessel Drill String Update
A planned major upgrade of a subsea mining vessel for operations off the West Coast of Africa would see the drill-string size increase. This increase in the size of the drill string would significantly increase the loads the drill tower would transfer to the vessel structure.
The vessel structural response under the increased tower loads had to be assessed, and from this what modifications would be required to the existing vessel structure determined.
Key Skills Exhibited
Experience in quasi-static structural behaviour and structural analysis was used to demonstrate what modifications were required to the vessel deck, side shell and bulkheads to support the new drill tower loads.
Demonstrable expertise in vessel modifications was shown, using a combination of computational analysis and first principles engineering. Structural modifications were developed in close collaboration with the Class Society which streamlined the approvals process. A complete solution of Class Approved structural modifications was provided to the client.
