CALM Buoy Replacement Risers
Customer Challenge
Client had a Fast-Track requirement for installation of replacement risers plus a new control umbilical in a single season. These were to run from an offloading terminal CALM buoy to the seabed using a steep wave configuration.
The control umbilical was to be piggy-backed to one of the risers. The work content was substantial, because the original mooring & in-situ analysis models for the buoy & risers were not available. Also, the new risers had different mechanical and hydrostatic properties to the original ones, having been installed 15 years previously. Orcaflex mooring models had to be developed with minimum available information and then benchmarked against the original mooring analysis report to ensure it was an accurate match for the motions. A more complex model was then developed to establish the characteristics of the new arrangement. |
Key Skills Exhibited
This was a complex in-situ riser analysis, requiring an excellent understanding of piggy-back line behaviour. Hydrodynamic modelling and Orcaflex skills were also tested thoroughly, requiring a model that matched the excursions, motions and accelerations reported in the original analysis report.
Demonstrable experience in working with remote teams - end-client in Malaysia, installation contractor also in Malaysia & the clamp design team elsewhere in the UK - required cooperating successfully with a large multi-cultural & multi-discipline team located in various locations and superb communication skills. |
